I'm considering on maybe getting a cat

1. For the past few years our property has been occupied, or should I say the bushes, and under cars, by feral cats.

2. Although most are gone recently, due to this crazy woman, that was at the property daily to catch them, take them to her home, put them in her garage, then try to acclimate them to living near humans (I think she's a pet hoarder). The older cats she had neutered or spayed, and returned them to the property.

3. What had be thinking was looking at the adorable wild kittens. They are so cute. And some friends of mine have cats, which are really quite lovable

4. During my lifetime, I had one cat. But had 9 dogs. I prefer dogs, but they are a lot of work. Especially since I live in an apartment.

5. And if I'm away who will walk the dog?

6. If I'm away, a cat would be easier to handle. Although litter boxes I'm not crazy about. I wonder if I could train the cat to go out on the balcony, and use a litter box? Or would it leap off (I'm 4 floors up!)

7. Unlike my turtle, who can go without eating for weeks, a cat (or dog) is a new responsibility that I can't take lightly.

7. So I must consider the pros and the cons seriously.

If purchase or adopt one from the Pet Store or Humane Society, can I also order this gentleman to go with it?

Yum.

I mean, uh, yes, cats are great! I've always been more of a cat person. I've had about three dogs in my life, but I've had 15 cats: Gordo, Georgie, Sammy, Puffball, Bullet, Toby, Mouth, Junior, Peaches, Precious, Muffin, Belle, Sebastian, Rufus and Murray.

As for the cat box situation, cats are naturally curious and they may end up getting up on the balcony ledge and then falling far, far, far down. At my apartment in Phoenix, we had a balcony, and whenever I let Murray out there, he insisted on exploring beyond the realms of the patio space.

Cat boxes ain't so bad. Just make sure you get one with filters at the top; use Fresh Step kitty litter (I've found this to be the best); and place some sort of de-odorizer by it. Also, clean it out every day of course.

In all honesty, you COULD probably train a cat to use the box on the balcony, but keep a VERY close eye on on the cat. I just don't trust their judgment sometimes.

Keep us posted on your hunt for pussy!

The other thing I worry about is not being home a lot, with work and out on the weekends. The cat would be lonely! Maybe I should get 2! When I went away to college, my dog and best friend started getting sick. He stopped eating, and got really thin. Later he bounced back a bit, but really was never well after that, especially when I returned yearly to college. We later had to put him down. I don't want my pussy being lonely.

lol @ your last sentence.

Yeah, actually, two would be a good idea. Murray is the only cat I've currently got in my apartment, and you can tell he gets lonely. I'd get him a feline friend, but honestly, he prefers dogs over cats - and I don't plan to get a dog until we live in a place with a yard. So that means I tend to stay pretty busy trying to keep him entertained when I am home. He is very needy and longs for attention.

That is sad to hear about your doggy, though. :( Poor thing.

The answer to your last quest is, yes. Most shelters offer gentlemen with their cats nowadays. Something to do with the recession and high unemployment.

Cats could not only fall the four floors, but some cats may try to jump it. This happened to a friend.

As for training the cat to go out on the patio. If the doors are closed, then the cat will likely find another spot inside to do it's business. Especially if you're away a lot.

Each cat is different. All the cats I've ever had have missed me terribly when I'm away, as evidenced by tremendous neediness upon my return (and anxiety upon leaving). But I've known people who swear their cats don't miss them much or at all.

They're less work than dogs, but they're not emotionless robots either, so it's good your'e thinking about all this. I had two cats who hated each other, but I still think that they kept each other from being lonely.

A cat? Cats are wonderful! But of course I have to say that, I own cats myself and I just LOVE them!
About the litter box... to place it out of the balcony isn´t that bad, I live in the 3th floor and my cats always walk out of the baclony, they want to be outside at least a bit... I have a cat protection web around my balcony, that way I don´t have to worry they could fall or jump over the balcony... I´m allowed to have the cat protection web around my balcony... you should ask first if you are allowed to have it too... I can take a pic and show you if you want..

Cats don´t care that much if they are alone a lot... but of course to have two it´s much better than just one... my cats don´t worry that much when I´m not at home..cats sleep a lot during the day and if you get two who are used to each other, there won´t be any problem.
But of courese, they will be happy if you are back home and happy if you spend some time with them.

Cats are lovely animals..I had/have a lot of cats, some stayed at my parents house when I moved, but they still love me and I´m always happy to see them. I had dogs too, three I owned the others I took care and found good homes for them. I love dogs, too, but I prefer cats. There is this saying: Dogs have owners cats have personal. LOL Cats are so different than dogs, they only come to you when they want not like a dog you can call and they come and are happy. Cats have their own personality and it´s true, you don´t have that much work like with a dog. I love dogs but I always would prefer cats...
Think about the pros and the contras seriouly it´s a good thing, be sure that you really want to share and take the time with one or two cats... I can understand that a turtle is much easier to handle like a cat or two... it´s good that you´re really thinking about what´t the best.
If you decide to get one or even two cats, I can tell you I always prefered to go to the animal shelter than to buy one... especial cats there are so many homeless ones, they are starving and often they got killed just for being cats and having no home. I´m sure a cat or even two who are homeless would be happy to find a new home with you and really know to appreciate it. All my cats I found outside sick and homeless or got them out from the animal shelter and they all loved/love me very much for saving their lives...

I own cats since 1995 I know a bit about them, if you need help or have questions, just send a message and ask... I´m happy to help. :-)

Oh, I can´t see the pic you posted....
