To live or not to Live in SF
Dec. 13th, 2007 11:53 pm4 days ago I received an email from South Coast Partners. They are recruiters for major international companies dealing in all aspects of real estate. They had been trying to reach me. I never updated my resume since moving to South San Francisco, last year, in November. So my nonexistent home phone number was on there (but my cell was correct). We had been communicating off and on over the last 5 or 6 yrs. This time the email said they had a position in SF, with a great package deal and to email or call them ASAP. Well, I did email within the hour, with my updated Resume and phone numbers (I updated my Monster Resume tonight). Busy at work, I did not call. And with the time zone difference, I could not call after work. And didn't in the morning either. I sorta let the ball drop on this one. But maybe they already found someone else? Usually they respond to an email or call quickly. Last time this happened, the job offer was not in SF, but in Hayward. Being located in TX, they do not know the lay of the land, so anything within 60 miles if SF, is considered SF.
So it got me thinking. Again. I am finally getting to like the area. I like the company I am working with. My superiors are cool. Parking is easy. Shopping easy. Much foggier than Redwood City, but less foggier than Pacifica. It is suburban, but only a 15 minute drive to the Castro. And BART is close too. So why do I want to live in SF? Because my friends are there. Because "gay" is there. If I could work and live close to the Castro, at least a 10 min walk, or an easy cab ride, I would love it.
But if I had to live on the West side of SF, like the Sunset, forget it. Might as well stay here. It is easier to get to the city from here, than from the Sunset. Less driving time.
On the other hand, living in the Castro? Would I get "gayed out?" Hanging out at Starbears(bucks), on Sat, would be nice. Running into people I know often, would be nice too. But would the novelty wear off? Some friends that live in the Castro, rarely go out. They say the novelty wore off for them. As for now, I can still do all of this. Just have to drive a bit. But like tonight, instead of staying in, I could just pop out for a walk, get an ice cream, run into my friends, do a last minute dinner, etc.... it would be nice. I really have to think about this often. Just in case. Because in this business, if I took an offer, I'd have to move fast. Move out of the office, and my apartment fast. If there were a job offer, it would have to be really, really, good, for me to move again. I don't think I could physically move again so soon. I have already moved 2 times in 3 years. But then again..............
What I need to also do is start entertaining again.... need to have my friends over.... a lot.
