:)

Atlanta Airport - Air Traffic Control
You gotta love this one even if you've never lived in the South. Some of you will enjoy this more than others.....Southerners can be so polite.

Atlanta ATC: "Tower to Saudi Air 511 -- You are cleared to land
eastbound on runway 9R
Saudi Air 511: "Thank you Atlanta ATC.. Acknowledge cleared to land on
infidel's runway 9R - Allah be Praised."
Atlanta ATC: "Tower to Iran Air 711 --You are cleared to land
westbound on runway 9R."
Iran Air 711: "Thank you Atlanta ATC. We are cleared to land on
infidel's runway 9R. -Allah is Great."

Pause......

Saudi Air 511: "ATLANTA ATC - ATLANTA ATC!"
Atlanta ATC: "Go ahead Saudi Air 511."
Saudi Air 511: "YOU HAVE CLEARED BOTH OUR AIRCRAFTS FOR THE SAME RUNWAY
GOING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. WE ARE ON A
COLLISION COURSE.
INSTRUCTIONS, PLEASE!"
Atlanta ATC: "Well bless your hearts and praise Jesus. Y'all be careful
now and tell Allah "hey" for us.

Ah. Doesn't work that way. See runway 9R going one way would be runway 27L the other.

And, runway 9R would be going east, runway 27L would be going west.

See?

You see, at ATL, they have runways 8R/26L, 8L/26R, 9R/27L, 9L/27R and 10/28. The big number, minus the smaller number equals 18.

Very interesting. I never knew that. So is the 18, standard for all airport runways?

[identity profile] grizzlyzone.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's like a circle.
3 o'clock is 90 degrees - runway 9
6 o'clock is 180 degrees - runway 18
9 o'clock is 270 degrees - runway 27
10 o'clock is 300 degrees - runway 30.

The 18 is just a... number for 180 degrees

Wow. I am trying to pull up maps of other airports to see; SFO, O'Hare, LAX. any recommended site for this?

Just google the name of the airport, "runway" and "maps".
