An AT&T rep told me today that I could unlock an iPhone to work on Sprint. Wrong! Here are some tidbits with regards to unlocking your iPhone to work with other compatible networks.

iPhones cannot be used with Sprint. Sprint works on a different network (cdma) vs , AT&T (gsm). Damn!

The only other major US carrier that uses the GSM standard is T-Mobile. My ex (who works for T-Mobile) uses an unlocked iPhone on their network. Sprint and Verizon are completely out of the question since they use CDMA technology.

It gets worse with the 3G iPhone; T-Mobile uses a different standard for high-speed data (UMTS rather than HSDPA) so if you want 3G speeds there's no alternative at all to AT&T in this country.
