I have an old iMac G4, "basket ball Style" desktop. If I purchase a Laptop, will it be compatible for exchanging info??? Sometimes the guys at the apple store don't know their stuff....

Yes. Any data that is created on one machine can be handled by corresponding programs on the other machine... that means any pictures, documents, etc.
