well I guess there is some truth to this.... But who is bringing anybody down?

During this election year let's be reminded of these words:

* You cannot help the poor, by destroying the rich.

* You cannot strengthen the weak, by weakening the strong.

* You cannot bring about prosperity, by discouraging thrift.

* You cannot lift the wage earner up, by pulling the wage payer down.

* You cannot further the brotherhood of man, by inciting class hatred.

* You cannot build character and courage, by taking away men's initiative and independence.

* You cannot help men permanently, by doing for them what they could and should, do for themselves.

It was Abraham Lincoln

Very, very wise words, written years ago and we still don't get it

Definitely worth quoting....

That said, I would be very interested in knowing what your response was.

But I don't want to hijack your blog for a protracted LJ debate over commercialism. It would be rude. ;-)

Well I did not respond. Really no use. We all see things in different perspectives (glass half full thing). I think there is truth to these word, but I think that these friends (and my sister) think that Obama is destroying the rich and a lot of what is said here, which I feel is not the case. So what if the very very rich have to pay a bit more tax? That is not destroying them. Funny that since time began, and through Biblical times, that it is always the struggle (and sometime with hatred and greed) between the poor and the rich.

I completely agree, but as you said, it's not going to change anything. There is just soemthing about money that when you have a lot of it, you guard it closely. You'd think at some point you'd think, there's a lot, and I can't use it all, so what's the harm if it goes to a worthy cause?

I know people think expecting the rich to pay greater taxes will destroy the ambition to succeed that drives the economy. Funny, I thought people had ambition on their own. I didn't think it was just about the benjamins. Isn't success its own reward?

It's been said that if we don't learn from history, we will just end up repeating it.
