I was just at Trader Joe's in So San Francisco, after work, for some quick dinner food, and had noticed a nice looking man, bearish, earring, tat, and a shaved head. Hummm. I wonder if he is gay. After a few minutes of shopping, I then entered the line behind him. He was with his wife. I may be wrong, but weren't things different years ago? Where you really could tell who was gay or not. Or at least the "stereotypes' were possibly more visible. Or am I out of it, as I creep up in age?

It was almost a given, yrs ago, that a man with an earring was sure to be gay. I think that the process was that if the earing was on the right you were gay, on the left you were straight (or was it the other way around). Today it seems no longer the case. You can wear rings anywhere. Shaved heads, or very short hair, a #1, #2 cut, were also a possible indication of possibly being gay. Of course after movies, with actors such as Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel, shaved heads became the norm (of course "Mr. Clean" paved the way too (lol)).

And of course Gay men were perceived as that old flaming man, with limp wrists, flighty effeminate personality.... well you know what I mean. And of course a bottom. If you were a bottom, you would basically keep that to yourself, or only share with close friends. For you would be perceived by some people as that flame, or at least a weak person that is not in control. In fact many were a bit embarrassed to say they were a bottom.

That seems to have changed. Or at least all are more open about it. Bottoms, as with tops, fit all descriptions of persona. Muscle men, butch men, nelly men, bear men, can be either. Some men that look like "Daddies" may be bottoms, and some that you would thing are bottoms, are tops. This I know has always existed, but it seems more open. And more seem to be on both spectrum's. Not locked into the same mode. Willing to do both.

Then there are the straight men, who are 100% straight, who have no qualms of showing their, feminine side. A bit of makeup (mens makeup of course). Get the facials, manicures, etc. Dressed to the tee, looking too GQ, and almost looking too gay. I am so confused :o)

Things have most definitely changed. It's just not the same as it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. I think a lot of it has to do with such huge change in trends with men. Lots more is acceptable these days for men than they used to be.

As far as the top/bottom thing goes, I've never had a problem admiting that I am a bottom. I've had a lot of trouble convinceing people of it, but never admitting it. The way I look at it is that it's better for them to know up front. That way if they are looking for a top, they can look elsewhere and not waste both our time.

i think that it is a lot tougher these days to identify who is gay and who isn't. LOL, sure makes dating tough, don't it? :o)
