cellboyhere comes Z Storm!
1. I always find it interesting how the media, here in the Bay Area makes a big deal of the first big rain storm to arrive (tomorrow btw).
2. As if a hurricane were on it's way.
3. My parents, after we first arrived from Quebec in the 60's would laugh at how most Californians would drive, when it would just be drizzling out. Slow like they were going to drive off a cliff.
4. They have not seen anything, my dad would say, as we used to drive, with chains or no chains on the icy Sherbrooke roads. (In fact many a time, my Dad and family (and I later on my own) would drive our front wheel drive Peugeot sedan over the Donner Summit's icy highway towards Lake Tahoe, without chains, with no fear at all. While most of the locals, drove like they were to fall though an ice pond).
5. Well it's kind of exciting. This storm, coming from Hawaii's direction, is a warm one, thus a wet one (unlike our usual ones from the Pacific Northwest, which are cold and damp). It's warm a balmy at the moment, with a slight warm breeze..."the calm before the storm".
6. There are some dangers that can occur. We have not had rain since maybe last May?
7. The cities storm drains, are full and possibly clogged with leaves and residue. Therefore, many streets and highways will have flooding.
8. The highways and city streets have accumulated oils on the surface. A little rain, and the roads become slick.
9. The soil is thirsty, but too much rain, too soon, most will run off, down to the lower elevations, causing even more flooding.
10. The mountain areas that experienced fires over the summer, will certainly experience major mudslides.
11. Oh. And of course with the wind, fallen trees hence power outages (I cooked a chicken breast and baked potato, for tomorrow night... Murphy's Law... time to cook dinner? Here comes the power outage)
12. But on the positive side, I love this time of year. The warm rains remind me so much of the warm rains of the East Coast as a child.
13. But! When it rains in California it can rain! In fact a lot!
