Having lived on the mid-peninsula for most of my life, I always get the sudden urge, after the first rain in the fall, to drive up La Honda Road, though the Redwoods, and make visit to one of my favorite spots, Memorial Park. Divided by creek (which is damned up in summer for swimming), with camping spots on one side, and picnicking on the other. Walking the trails, with the pungent odors of the moist Redwood trees, and the changing color of the other foliage makes it worth the visit. The trip of course, is not complete until you continue on the narrow road to the coast, Pescadero and San Gregorio beaches (if you want a "really narrow" road, try Old La Honda Road, off Sand Hill. It's a "squeeze" for two oncoming cars :)

I so love the San Mateo County Mountains and coast.

It is! If your into the hiking thing, check out Windy Hill (the large open green space in the Santa Cruz Mts, above Palo Alto/Menlo Park). It takes 2 cars. One parked down at the bottom, on Alpine Road (PV), the other to drive up to the starting point on Skyline Blvd. The walk downhill, goes through fields, redwoods, streams, and some big estates. But get there early, so you don't get stuck hiking in the dark like I did once (scary!)
