Sodas: High-Fructose Fandango
What would happen if you took two groups of healthy adults, one composed of subjects whose parents had type 2 diabetes, and fed all the subjects about 1.6 grams of fructose per pound of bodyweight per day for a week? (For comparison, purposes, a one 2-ounce can of regular soda contains about 40 grams of high-fructose sugar). The results are staggering. Fat within liver and muscle cells increased by 76% and 79%, and 47% and 24%, for the non diabetic-parents and diabetic -parents groups , respectively; triglycerides increased by 51% and 110% and insulin sensitivity decreased by 4% and 5% respectively.

Home Cookin'

A recent study from the University of Minnesota found that high schoolers who eat dinner with their families 5-7 times a week are more likely to consume breakfast and fruit, and are less likely to suffer from depression. Their peers who never have family dinner, however, are 2.8 times more likely to be overweight and six times more likely to have food-based insecurities.
