1. Friday night, it was the usual out with Mark and Jim for happy hour. Jim and I, of course checked out what's happening at Magnet. Usually they have Wine, and Cheese receptions, displaying art of some sort. This time it was the art of Jack Davis. It certainly drew a sizable crowd!

Jack Davis’s crocheted penises will grace Magnet’s gallery wall throughout January, with an opening reception on Friday the 7th at 8pm.

Davis’s three-dimensional penises are made from yarns that are cotton, silk, wool and synthetic. Sometimes he recycles yarn from by taking apart thrift-store sweaters and a few yarns are hand dyed. Some penises are crocheted from found string. While there is an element of humor in his work, he do...es take his work seriously. Whenever Davis talks about his work with people, it isn’t long before they start laughing about questions like “How are your penises hung?” He uses the word “penis” instead of “dick” or “cock” specifically because I think it’s a more serious term.

Back in the old days when he entered art shows using slides, there were several times when he was accepted into a show, but his work was rejected when it arrived after the gallery realized they weren’t crocheted abstract forms, the pieces really were penises.

About Jack Davis
Davis received his Masters degree in Art, focusing on Fibers, from Illinois State University in Normal Illinois. Along with wall hangings and coiled baskets, he included crocheted penises in his graduate show. He moved to San Francisco in 1981 and his first show was at Good Vibrations where he showed his penises in 1983. For a few years, starting in 1990, Davis co-facilitated workshops with Keith Hennessy where they brought queer men together to get naked and explore the relationship between sex and spirituality. These workshops were called Phallic/Image partly because in the first ones Davis led the participants through the naked craft experience of making a penis by wrapping and winding fabric strips. He currently lives in San Francisco.See More

WOW! Thanks for this. Very exciting. When I win the lottery, I am going to have my winter home in SFO. Yup! Maybe when I have the first male/male romance on the NYT bestseller list. It is going to happen. (((HUGS)))

(and how do I find out more about this artist?)
