I can totally understand why. I've been there and this is not surprising having gotten to know a bit about the Japanese.

Back in my 'corporate days', I made a visit to a company restaurant in Tokyo. I also spent 10 days with a friend on a more touristy visit. Tokyo is clean, modern and efficient. As someone recently pointed out after his first visit - for a megalopolis, Tokyo is unbelievably quiet: No loud blaring horns or impatient gestures, people and traffic move in orderly fashion. Everything runs like a watch with little or no drama. Even the frantic rush hours in Shinjuku station were without loudness, rudeness or drama.

Perhaps the best illustration of the character of the Japanese was their law-abiding nature. If you get to your train platform before your train arrives, there are painted areas to place luggage. No one will mess with it if you leave. We arrived very early at the station in Hikone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikone,_Shiga) and left our luggage at the platform and decided to have lunch. Halfway through my soup, I realised I'd left the (corporate-owned) Hi-8 video camera in plain sight on top of the pile of bags at the platform.

You guessed it, when we got back, the camera along with everything else was completely undisturbed in the midst of the busy platform.
