Happy 40th!
Aug. 17th, 2009 10:08 pmI am of that generation where I guess I was not a major part of the baby boomer generation. I remember Elvis, the Everley Brothers, The Platters in their prime; but it's a bit foggy; I was too young. I remember the Hippie era, but still a bit too young. And of course the Disco era and on....
Although only 16 yrs old at the time; My parents would not let me go. Or should I say pay my way to go. But some of my friends or older friends did :(. They said to this day that it was awesome. A moment in time, where so many people at one time, had fun, and got along.
The bands, the hair. The bell bottom jeans!
This 3 day moment in time, was a release of the stress accumulating from the events of the time. The killings of Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and the thousands of men and women in a no good war.
Some quick flash backs of the time;
1. My brother-in-law, was in a rock band for yrs. So I followed my sister to many of the gigs in the Bay Area. I remember a bunch of bands playing for free, on a Friday night in Lytton Plaza on Univeristy Ave, Palo Alto. Can you say Grace Slick? Stills and Nash?
2. I remember some of their hippie friends. Some I remember visiting in some tired rentals or home in East Palo Alto. One was on the floor coming off a trip (LSD? Mescaline? Who knows?). In fact I remember a lot of their hippie friends.... some were pretty cool, sexy, some drug free, and some very messed up ( and some now, very wealthy (patented a microphone which is seen on tv and concerts today)).
3. And pot was of course everywhere at the time. Yes. Brownies too! Some of my friends did experiment with LSD, and other major substances. I never did. Maybe seeing some of the messed up friends kept be away from the stuff. But for some reason, I wish I sorta had.
4. I remember the rock concerts, every Friday afternoon in at my high school. Some were pretty good!
5. I remember seeing Jefferson Airplane (I had a crush on Grace Slick), Crosby Stills and Nash. My first real concert at Winter Land! (SF).
6. I remember me and my friend riding our bicycles to Keplers books to get the free, phycadilic playbills of the events happening in the US that week. Great art. We would staple them to the ceilings of our bedroom. They looked great under a black light.
7. I just dug up my old Woodstock album. Now were the F is my turntable?
A much different time than now.....
