For Immediate Release:
Since 2002 Mama Reinhardt and her group (aka Mamas Family) have been collecting toys and funds from the GLBT community during the holiday season for San Francisco Bay Area children in need. In the past 5 years they have amassed over 18,000 toys and raised over $25,000 to send Bay Area HIV positive kids to a unique Summer program and assisted the San Francisco Police Department in collecting thousands toys for the less fortunate families in the City’s neighborhoods.
Her “family” of volunteers single handedly has taken on this effort and it is considered one of the largest and few San Francisco GLBT toy drives of the holiday season. They have no intention of putting this much needed work to rest either; in fact, they plan on making the 2007 toy drive bigger and better than ever!
The group collects funds and toys during the drive events (see below), which sponsors youth in the non-profit organization Sunburst Projects http://www.sunburstprojects.org/. Their sister program, called Camp Sunburst, a specialized youth camp for children afflicted by HIV, is important in allowing HIV positive kids to come together to realize they don’t face their health issues alone and there are others like them in the world who choose to live long and healthy lives.

While Camp Sunburst needs toys, the need is not as many as is donated every year. The remaining toys are donated to the San Francisco Police Department’s toy drive. The 4000 or more toy donations in past years have been a saving grace for them as donations from the general public have dwindled year after year.

Listed are the exciting events Mama Reinhardt and her family are putting together for the season. They are all open to the public (be advised that most locations are 21 and older only please) and people are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to contribute. Gift cards, for teen age groups, and infant toys and supplies are appreciated as well as toys for boys and girls of all ages.

There are a couple of toy drop off locations in the Castro and South of Market areas listed if you cannot attend an event and wish to make a donation. Large donations, those that require a pick up of an oversize item, or if you need further information, you may contact Mark Paladini, the program coordinator, at (415) 253-0809.
