Auto memories (part 3)
Jan. 5th, 2010 08:27 amJust some snap shots from my mind, when it comes to what cars my parents had when I was a kid, and teenager. What cars did you grow up with?
(Some of these phots may not be exactly accurate as to date of photo (via Google images))
I vaguely remember my Dad had a company car in Canada, I think it was a Pontiac Star Chief (renamed Executive for the USA market?), which was not taken to CA with us. It was cobalt blue or black

1962 Pontiac Star Chief
The Buick Lesaber, purchased in Quebec, and later driven out for our move to CA in 1963.
The tan colored Buick (lighter than this color) was essentially my mom's car. For 60 bucks or so, she could fill the huge trunk with groceries!

In the mid 60's, I think 1965, my dad purchased a teal green 1965 Corvair Monza Spyder convertible. Fun car. And my first "stick shift" education. My sister was allowed to use it often till she got in trouble partying in it. Such are the way of teens :). My dad later traded it in, for the next car, which he regretted later.

The 1968 Peugot 404. It was an UGLY baby blue color. Comfortable on the inside, but ugly on the outside (but not as ugly as my aunt's Citroens). The stick shift was on the wheel column, which I actually preferred. It glided easily over the snow/ice covered highways to Lake Tahoe. But it was constantly in the shop.

Later the Buick and Peugot were traded to purchase a Olds Cutlass, 2 door, which was a piece of ****. Problems from day one.
And my best and fondest memory is of my first car. A 1967 Austin Healy Sprite. And of this wonderful color. With money I saved working nights after school, I purchased this car from my brother-in-law (for a whopping $500), in my Junior year of High School). It was a good learning car too. I changed the clutch several times, and the Universal Joint once. It got me to school, got me in trouble with a girl (and it wasn't the car's stick shift that did the troubling, but mine), and got me over and over and over the Grapevine to college in Orange County for years. I eventually sold it back to my brother-in-law. He later sold it. But a few years ago, I saw it tooting around Redwood City (the license plate, URR 003, is easy to remember)
