and yet another thing to boycott
Nov. 13th, 2008 04:18 pmFellow MovieBears,
We have recently learned that Alan J. Stock, Chairman of the Cinemark Corporation, donated $9,999 to “ProtectMarriage.Com – Yes On 8, A Project of California Renewal”. Mr. Stock’s reported income in that corporation is $7,900,000 (Forbes Magazine). Cinemark, which is based in Plano, Texas, is the holding corporation of the Century, CinéArts and Tinseltown Theater chains.
In addition, Mr. Stock is an active member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (The Mormons – another major donor to the Yes On 8 campaign). As such, his obligatory tithe to the Mormon Church, based on his reported income, is $790,000 per anum.
Due to his advocacy of Proposition 8 and the Mormon Church, which also supports Proposition 8, SF MovieBears will be leading a boycott of all Cinemark Theaters starting on November 20th, 2008.
We currently are holding ~80 pre-bought Cinemark movie passes which we will be using on Wednesday November 19th to see the James Bond film “Quantum of Solace”. We will be having this final showing exclusively as a way of recouping our assets on pre-bought tickets, meaning they already have our money! We discourage you from purchasing any food from the theater’s concession stands if you join us that night.
We are contacting our fellow MovieBear clubs across the country and encouraging them to boycott the Cinemark-associated theater chains. Cities with MovieBear clubs include:
Chicago, IL
Cincinnati, OH
Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Las Vegas, NV (Part of KUMA in Vegas)
Los Angeles, CA (Part of KUMA in LA)
Minneapolis, MN
Phoenix, AZ
Seattle, WA, and
Washington, D.C.
SF MovieBears hopes that when you go out to the movies, you will boycott the Cinemark theater chains in California, and in any other state in which they operate. Teach corporations that if they want to encourage hate in the state of California, that they can pay for it fiscally across the United States, and in any place that they operate.
So remember: “See it in another theater, or wait until it comes out on DVD!”
