1. About 8 years ago, when I lived in Redwood City, I was into the daily morning 4 mile walk/run thing (got me from a 34 to a 28 waist!).
2. So one cool fall morning while walking, suddenly my right nostril started bleeding profusely. I mean a lot.
3. After getting home, drenched in blood, I called a nose specialist, for an appointment that week
4. She had said this is common, and that there is a blood vessel on the surface of the bone, inside the nose, at the entry of the scull, that is on the surface and sometimes ruptures, usually when weather is dry and cold.
5. So she cauterized the vessel. Except for one more incident 7 years ago, which required one more cauterization (takes a second). All was fine.
6. So last night, before bed, I just stood up after brushing my teeth, and it happened. Gush, gush, gush. It felt like I lost a cup. First time in 7 years.
7. Armed with TP soaked in cold water, I stopped it, and applied some ointment that I had from before.
8. The weather has changed. Cold dry nights, and warm days. That's when it happens.
9. Two things: Good thing it did not happen at the gym, or at work. I visited friend Griff last night at the Geary Kaiser (SF), who is in for pneumonia. Good thing it did not happen there (how embarrassing!)
10. I emailed the Doc at Kaiser (SSF), and hopefully she can take me today. I have gym tonight.
11. Better bring lots of tissue. Better keep lots of tissue in my pockets all day! :)
12. I was up till 1 am, with this, so this morning I just had to have some coffee (off the wagon a 3rd time :(

My son did that constantly growing up, it's been cauterized several times. He did okay when he was living in the snow belt, but he's back here and it's started again already

The doc told me to just keep it moist, Neosporum or the like, daily to keep moist. She did do a light cauterization, so hope it works.

Before I started using a CPAP (with heated humidifier), I also had this type of problem every winter.

I suspect that your sinuses are getting too dry. Irrigation before you go to bed (and maybe when you wake up in the morning) will help. So will applying saline gel inside of both nostrils before going to sleep.

Nasal irrigation kits are available at most local drug stores, as are saline nasal gels such as Rhinaris (my preference) or Ayr nasal gel.

Maybe I need to think about getting into some medical scenes. :)
