I think it's screwy that simple untershirt tank tops are referred to as "wife beaters" now.

I mean, they weren't before. Why change?

Yeah. After searching around, looks like that term either first came up from tv shows; or its a southern United States of America colloquialism (Wife beater or Shooter shirt)
