eep! That is rather blind. Have you considered Lasik? My former flatmate was probably as bad off as you were, and he had it done. Now he's 20/20, and *loving* it. My eyes are good enough that I don't need glasses, but I probably will when I am 40-45 or so. The idea of Lasik is kinda scary to me... the whole slicing your cornea thing freaks me out.
I have seriously considered it for years. I have had glasses since 4th grade. So glad contacts became available yrs ago (they were the hard ones-ouch). My Dr. who specializes Lasik, actually talked me out of it. There are still risks, and I would have to still use reading glasses due to my age (54 as of today..eek! so ripe old age ha ha). But would be nice to see a great distance with out lenses. But then it is my only pair of eyes, afraid to take risks. And I know a few that have horror stories. Plus I have been wearing contacts for over 35 yrs which means I need to be with out them for 6 months or more to allow the eye to return back to its original shape before surgery. Then I wonder is 6-8 months enough? What if it isn't, and they think it is. And the surgery is done too soon. Then I may be screwed. At least with the new disposable lenses, I can sleep with them. So they feel as if I didn't have any on, they are so comfortable (and comfortable when having sex (lol)
