Save the Eagle from Closing

You may have heard rumors and I'm horrified to say it is true. If we as a community don't stop it, the Eagle Tavern in San Francisco will be closing at the end of April (yes, the end of this month)!

This is a call to all who have been a part of the Eagle community over the years, whether you have only been once or are a regular at SOMA's largest and most unique gay bar. The Eagle Tavern is one of the last alt, leather, punk, work...ing class gay bars in the city and we're getting together to make sure it won't go away without a fight!

Let's be clear: the Eagle Tavern is not closing because of financial difficulties. This is PROPERTY OWNER BULLSHIT. The property owner refuses to sign a long-term lease of the space to the Eagle, saying he doesn't want it there any more. He'd rather see condos or a straight bar. So he gave the Eagle Tavern only a month notice to vacate.

I'm certainly not bending over so our community can be fucked once again by some homophobic building owner!

We will be discussing strategies for fighting the Eagle's closure, as well as the ongoing crisis of loss of gay property ownership in San Francisco and the continuing erosion of our iconic gay bar scene.

To stop this, we have to rally as a community. If we come together, our collective voice will be heard! Join us Monday night to add your energy to the movement to SAVE THE EAGLE!

Eagle meeting tonight update.......

Tonight at the Eagle over 200 people came out to support the saving of the Eagle as a Queer space. There were many ideas shared and testimonies heard from members of our community as to why the Eagle has meant so much to them.
The offices of Scott Wiener and Jane Kim were represented and Bevan Dufty was on hand as well. Scott has arranged for us to have a press conference at 1 before we go to present our testimony at the Board of Supervisors at 2 pm.
We really hope as many of you come out as possible!
We also marched to the Skylark bar on 16th where 80 Queers took over the bar chanting "Hell NO we won't let the Eagle go!" The Skylark bar is the one trying to displace the Eagle as a space for Queers by buying the lease.
Although there is no evidence that this can or can't be stopped we have made great headway in keeping the Eagle Tavern from going the way of so many Queer spaces in San Francisco.
We have some political backing and lots of momentum and it is our belief that we can and will save the Eagle for future generations of Queers.
