I Wanted to give everyone a heads up that if you tend to give gift cards
around the holidays, you need to be careful that the cards will be
honored after the holidays. Stores that are planning to close after
Christmas are still selling the cards through the holidays even though
the cards will be (or may be) worthless January.
This list is not totally guaranteed for it's accuracy, but it is alarming to see list that long!

1. There is no law preventing them
from doing this. On the contrary, it is referred to as Bankruptcy
Planning. Below is a partial list of stores that you need to be
cautious about.

Ann Taylor - 117 stores nationwide closing
Lane Bryant, Fashion Bug, and Catherine's to close 150 stores nationwide

Speaking as someone who works for Lowe's: Lowe's is indeed opening fewer new stores due to the economy than previously planned, but NO stores are closing and the company is in quite good fiscal shape. Expansion will continue into 2009. In this past year alone Lowe's has expanded into Canada, and Mexico is soon to follow. (None of this is privileged information; it's all public.)

Please check your sources before posting this kind of info. The facts can easily be found on snopes.com.

That being said, I can personally vouch for Wilson Leather and Linens 'n' Things closing up shop in my area.

Well, that was an email from a friend, so really did not check every single one. But most of it is fairly accurate, and of course could change over time. But I am glad Lowe's is going well (I prefer over Home Depot). Our HD rep says that HD is not doing to well this yr, but by Home Depot Commercial selling it's division last yr, it should soften the blow.
And too bad Wilson's is closing. You can get really good buys on Leather pants and the like. In any case it is alarming to see a list that long :(
